How were Douglass and the other black workers treated by the white workers in the shipyard?
           Douglass and his fellow black workers faced disrespect, racial abuse, and physical violence. The white workers meted out disrespect towards the black workers by pushing for their firing, calling them niggers who should be killed. Black workers also faced physical violence in the form of whipping whenever white workers wanted, and physical attacks such as that meted on Douglass by four white men (Foner & Lewis, 1978, d. 39).
