About the Memos
In this course, you will write five short memos on questions your instructor poses about course readings. Later, you will discuss your memos with others and resubmit with revisions.
The purpose of the memos are:
for students to think carefully through some main lines of reasoning in course readings,
for students to develop their abilities to distill and convey complex ideas in writing, and
for the instructor and TAs to assess whether students understand course material.
Memos should be 300~400 words. The goal is to answer the instructor's question(s) thoroughly and efficiently.
Memos are graded on:
Whether they address the question posed (Good, Needs Improvement, No Points)
Whether they accurately and conscientiously reflect the course readings (Good, Needs Improvement, No Points)
Whether they are written in clear, efficient language (Good, Needs Improvement, No Points)
Memo 1
In chapter 1 of Algorithms & Autonomy (in week 2's Canvas module; see just section 1.5 for now), the authors provide a heuristic for thinking through moral problems. The first step of the heuristic is to clarify concepts.
With that in mind, address the following question in 300~400 words: Why is it important to clarify concepts?
A few tips:
Do not try to summarize the section (much less the chapter!). Just answer the question posed.
Assume your audience has read the chapter and understands it already.
Do not under-think the question. It is a straightforward question, and I am not trying to hide anything. But it requires a bit of thinking to pin down the answer.

Subject: Application of CED Thinking in Eliminating Systemic Racism
Dear Editor,
For years, professionals from all areas of the economy have battled to increase the importance of diversity (race and culture) in the creation of national policy in the United States. The most current evidence that these leaders are correct comes from data on the economic and health implications of the Covid 19 outbreak, as well as film of police aggression. Wealth inequality and institutional racism are inextricably linked in the United States (Schell et al., 2020). The upheaval in our public areas, as well as the inequity in our inpatient care facilities, requires our national citizens to confront this fact and respond. Several organizations have launched neighborhood economic development initiatives to alleviate the impact of systemic discrimination in our society and government..
Thank You.
Yours Sincerely,
James Kolberg
