Racism is a social issue that has existed for a long time, causing chaos among people from various races. It refers to discriminating against a person based on skin color and ethnicity. Systematic racism, sometimes called institutional racism, refers to racism embedded in the regulations and laws of an organization or a society (Welton et al., 2018). It manifests in education, the criminal justice system, healthcare, political presentation, housing, and employment. Colleges, Universities, and other educational institutions have the mandate to address these discriminations and help create a conducive society where people live in harmony. This is a challenging task considering that most people grew up in active or passive racist societies. Learning institutions like universities and colleges should incorporate courses that rebuke racism in their syllabus, defend and empower racism victims, and develop institutional accountability and make periodical reviews. As a mentor, I always advocate for equality and appreciation of our diverse nature in all our social, political, and economic practices.
Educational institutions should teach students the impact of racism in a progressive society during these highly innovative times. Universities and colleges are mandated to instill knowledge and skills to students. This knowledge should always be progressive and aim at ensuring that students grow positively in all aspects and learn to appreciate the diversity in society (Pirnavskaia & Kalenzi, 2021). These earning institutions should incorporate courses that teach about racial injustices and empower the students to change from their generations. For example, the blacks and the Indians in the US during the colonial era suffered racism discrimination. Most people from these races live in contemporary America. The generations of the white people who mistreated the Indians and African Americans should be taught that their ancestors did an injustice which they should not inherit.
