You are the curator of modern European art at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The Director and Trustees of the Museum have tasked you with purchasing a significant work of modern European art for the permanent collection. Your budget is $150 million, and you can purchase any artwork (e.g., print, painting, sculpture) that is either Post-Impressionist, German Expressionist (Die Brücke only), Proto-Cubist, Fauvist or Cubism, even if the work is currently in another museum or private collection.
You cannot, however, choose an image from Study Guide #1, though you can use an artist from the guide.
The work that you purchase will not only become part of MoMA’s permanent collection, but the Director will also use the work you purchase as the basis for a forthcoming exhibition on that artist (e.g., Manet), the style (e.g., Pre-Impressionism), or the actual artwork (e.g., Olympia, 1863). Please research the scholarly literature on the artwork you seek to purchase for MoMA, and then write a 4- page, double-spaced “Museum Purchase Justification Report” paper* using the following subheadings:
1. Background: Provide an image of the artwork. Then begin by writing a brief historical/biographical background on the artist & artwork, remembering to include tombstone information. Then describe the style of the art and identify similar artworks.
2. Significance: Why is this artist a significant/important European modern artist worthy of the MoMA’s permanent collection?
3. Scholarship: Discuss what leading art historians/scholars have said about this artist/artwork in the current literature.
4. Collection: What other artworks in MoMA’s collection (either by this artist, or other artists) would compliment this piece?
5. Budget: Please justify why this work will be strong enough to serve as the basis of a forthcoming exhibition, and is worth spending $150 million.**

The Harvest, Pontoise by Camille Pissarro
The painting is a late 19th-century artwork by Camille Pissarro, a Dano-French artist impressionist and neo-impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas, which is now the US Virgin Islands. The artist is popular for his contribution to both Impressionism and Post-impressionism. In 1873, he played a fundamental role in establishing a collective society that included fifteen aspiring artists. He held the group together and encouraged the other team members. He earned the title “Dean of the Impressionist Painters” from John Rewald not only because of being the oldest of the group but also because of his wisdom and warm personality. He has inspired other great artists, including Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Pissaro has acted as a father figure to all the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, hence the need to study his works.

The painting shows three people harvesting and a fourth person in the distance who appears to be clearing the bushes. As the three people harvest, they put their produce in bags. The painting shows the beauty of the natural environment in terms of its serenity and freshness. The painting has a conspicuous green color that makes it even more appealing to the viewers. The green color perfectly contrasts with the blue color used to paint the sky and the white color that signifies the clouds. The painting also shows trees, plants being harvested, and dry grass. One can also see some shrubs and other lower plants. A house is also noticeable between the trees, which means that the people engaged in the harvesting process live nearby. It was reported that the plants being harvested were potatoes.
This painting was inspired by Camille Corot, who had a passion for drawing landscapes and pictures of farms. Pissaro loved those paintings and also opted to try and draw one. Surprisingly, the challenge went well since the painting was one of the most appreciated landscape arts. Pissaro drew the inspiration of the brushwork from Georges Seurat, who cherished the expressive and broken brushwork tone. Pissaro also utilized the same technique and perfected it to produce a wonderful piece. Pissaro used the medium not only to express his passion but also to communicate to society. In the painting, he shows how beautiful nature can be if taken care of well and the appreciation of the fruits of hard work. It also shows the importance of teamwork since as more people work on a single project, the lighter the duty becomes for the team.
