The greatest fear for Winthrop about the American colony is that it may deviate from what was expected of them as a society and end up in destruction. Winthrop was afraid the American society may value wealth more that caring for one another and in the process destroy themselves slowly instead of being united. The Puritans believed that their relationship with God was based on the love they had towards one another. Without the love for one another in the community, they would not be blessed by God. In order to be right with God, the Puritans must be able to have love for the most vulnerable in the community such as the poor. The Puritans had to, therefore, love and share or help one another without expecting anything in return because that is God’s will.
Winthrop quoted “we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us” to mean that America was a leading nation around the world. It was an inspiration of civilization with a responsibility of offering guidance to the rest of the world into a better future. This quote reveals that the Puritans at the beginning of colonization were a people with great resources and influence. It also means that the Puritans viewed themselves as powerful people over the others in regards to wealth possession and privilege.
