Document Introduction
The document, titled “An African-American Soldier Notes the “Strange Paradox” of the War” is a letter written by an African-American soldier in the Armed Forces of the United States named Charles F. Wilson. The letter was addressed to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt calling his attention to the treatment of African-American soldiers. It was written on 9th May 1944 after President Roosevelt had stated the aims of the Armed Forces of the United States’ war in a press conference. How could they believe that they were fighting for a world where all persons could live in peace, honor, and dignity regardless of their race or creed? He argued that African-American soldiers would only believe that the president’s pronouncement meant what it said if the president issued an Executive Order. He posited that the president should issue an Executive Order which would form the basis on which democracy could be fought for in the Armed Forces of the United States (p.2). Wilson believed that issui...
