1). The tales that slaves in the Old South told were a form of expression. The slaves telling the tales wanted to impact and connect the listeners with their own customs and traditions to escape the pain of slavery. Further, this became a way of the tale tellers to connect with the listeners to give them motivation and encouragement despite the harsh conditions they were living through. It was a way of building each other to connect with their cultural values and sense of togetherness. The slaves listening to the tales would be impacted with knowledge, understanding of their social surroundings, and also enable them to build strong bonds among each other.
2). The slave woman telling the tale uses humor to convey her message. The humor enhanced the meaning of the tale because it kept the listeners engaged. The use of humor makes a story that looks sad appear significant in impacting knowledge. The sadness from the tale is removed and replaced with a comical effect that makes it comfortable for the listeners to grasp without feeling appalled. Through humor the message is passed across more effectively and it is bound to become memorable to the listeners. The woman uses humor to ensure that the listeners recognize that not all is sad because the slaves have a way of being self-sufficient despite being victimized.
3). Ford tried to represent himself as a man who valued slaves and as such he was giving them a better future. By impacting the notions of religion on the slaves, Ford was portraying himself as a master who aimed at seeing his slave’s progress and not remaining backwards. However, Tibeats represented himself to the white southerners as a man who wished to see slaves crashed to break their spirit. He aimed to show the white southerners that slaves had little value and their lives were useless. He made it clear that slaves should be treated harshly without any mercy.
4. The cruel treatment and humiliation of the slaves made them fearful and so it was difficult for them to adopt Northup’s strategy of resistance. The slaves in most cases had their spirits broken and felt hopeless to their situations increasing their powerlessness to resist.
