Job Discrimination
One of the hardest things one can experience in the workplace is job discrimination. In a world where workplaces have policies and governments have laws to prevent discrimination, it is unfortunate that the vice is still prevalent. In this age of internet and media freedom, one would expect that the incidents of discrimination in the workplace would be a thing of the past. I think job discrimination is quite pervasive in the modern world. It is not uncommon for one to read in the news that a certain company discriminates against its employees or a former employee has a sued a company for discrimination. It is important to recognize that discrimination comes in many forms, some of them being religious discrimination, religious origin discrimination, and discrimination due to disability, sex orientation, color, gender race, among others (U.S. Department of Justice). These forms of discrimination are prevalent in society today. A week ago, I read about how Facebook algorithms exclude women from viewing jobs (Hao par 1). I find it unfortunate for such a huge corporation to allow such discrimination in this age.
I have not experienced job discrimination personally but someone I know has. She’s transgender and has had difficulties getting jobs primarily because of her sexual orientation. Given this case and the stories I see in media, I would say job discrimination is still very prevalent in the modern workplace.
