Piecing Me Together is a meaningful yet informative piece of novel that should be publicized all the time. This genre is sensitive, yet it opens awareness to all people regarding discrimination and positivity through it. The story was heart-warming and heart-aching at the same time as the protagonist experiences different struggles. It was an incredible story that makes a significant imprint on its readers. To elaborate more on its review, this paper will deeply analyze the meanings behind every book's word.
The story of Piecing Me Together started with a girl protagonist named Jade, a scholarship student in a private school, St. Francis, outside of her community. In her school, she struggles as she experiences discrimination regarding her opportunity of studying abroad. The school then instructed her to be part of an organization named Woman to Woman, a mentorship program. There she met various people who only saw her worth as a charity piece, and eventually, she grew indifferent to them. One day, she even met a new friend who was a white girl who had the same circumstances as her, except the discrimination. Nearing the end of the story, Jade fought with her white friend as she was indifferent to racial discrimination, told her mentor about her adverse behavior, and voiced her opinion to her school about how she is being treated. Afterward, changes can be seen in her environment and slowly, things were different from how it was before. At the end of the story, Jade spearheaded an exhibit that presents her experiences with the inspiration of a young black lady who was harmed (Watson, 2017).
Racism
According to Ahmed et al. (2007), racism refers to having a hierarchy between different races, resulting in some races being sawed as inferior to others. They even elaborated that such ranking provides superiority towards other races, leading to unequal distribution of resources and opportunities. Such actions brought forth prejudice and discrimination that people experience, just like breathing (p. 318). This serves as a generalization of what happened to Jade in the story.
Racial discrimination can be seen in every part of the story. For example, is the part where Jade, who was promised of being able to study abroad, was not added to the list of possible applicants and instead was forced to attend a mentorship seminar.
