What is hegemonic masculinity? Describe an example of hegemonic masculinity that you have seen in the last week, either in your personal interactions or in the media. How do these media messages impact your own sense of your gender presentation? Do you feel that tend to follow the gender norms of our culture? How or how not?

Hegemonic masculinity is described as a practice that enhances men’s dominance in society and validates the subservience of the common man and woman. In other words, hegemonic masculinity seeks to explain why males maintain dominant social roles compared to women and other gender identities considered feminine by society.

An example of hegemonic masculinity that I have seen in the last week in the media is competitive sports. They represent a powerful platform in which masculinity and hegemonic masculinity are performed. This has made me understand how sporting contexts are a fertile breeding ground for constructing hegemonic masculinity. The media tends to represent male athletes to normalize violent masculinity (ENV WorkStudy, 2016). I feel that these media messages are consistent with the gender norms of our culture because the male gender is usually associated with aggressive behavior.
