Understanding Research Design and Approaches
A social problem is an issue within a society that negatively affects many people by preventing them from achieving their full potential. Poverty is one of the critical social problems that I am interested in. Poverty is a socio-economic issue or condition in which people within a society lack financial resources to meet their basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, thus affecting their living standards (Lipton & Ravallion, 1995). Poverty has several socio-economic factors that influence the economic activities of people negatively. These factors include overpopulation, corruption, lack of education and healthcare, unemployment, and cultural and religious discrimination (Niemelä, 2008). In researching this topic, pragmatic worldview and mixed-method research involving quantitative and qualitative data will be used because it offers the best understanding of a research problem.
Being poor makes people powerless, insecure, violates their dignity and involves renunciation of choices and opportunities. Poverty determines the socio-economic status of individuals, and no one desires to be poor (Burtless, 2006). The World Bank Group aims to fight poverty by providing evidence to the government and encouraging them to develop policies that reduce poverty and promote prosperity. This study will focus on poverty and factors that promote extreme poverty in society.
The critical elements of the study are the causes of poverty. They include a lack of clean water and nutritious food. People acquire an illness, lack strength and energy due to lack of food and clean water and end up using all their money and assets on the hospital, thereby causing them to live in extreme poverty (Sachs, 2005).
