The Zaatari Refugee Camp is the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world and was opened by the Jordanian government and the United Nations in 2012. In 2017, there were over eighty thousand people in Zaatari and a total of 461,701 refugees had passed through the camp. They started by living in tents, but they eventually built shelters made from corrugated metal containers called “caravans.” The lives of refugees are harrowing, and for this week, you will examine their survival skills.
After reviewing the required sources, briefly describe how Zaatari has developed its own economy. Consider what could happen if the refugee camp became a long-term solution. What basic economic, energy, and social services would need to be provided, and who should pay for them?

Jordanians and Syrians have a long history of trade whereby family ties have cemented this relationship. The cordial connection has been extended in the face of the prevailing refugee crisis where Jordan created the Zaatari Refugee Camp to ‘house’ Syrian refugees. The refugees have had less time to have pity on themselves evident in the fact that they have begun approximately 3,000 businesses (PBS NewsHour, 2016). Surprisingly, all these small-scale businesses are inside the camp. There are pastry businesses and barbershops while others have enrolled for entrepreneurial mentorship programs.
Besides, the cities in proximity have relaxed employment regulations allowing them to seek jobs. It is impressive on what Jordanians have done to accommodate their neighbors who are undergoing major and inhumane predicaments.
However, it is important to acknowledge that if the refugee camp is perceived as the long-term solution, the Jordanian government may be unable to meet their necessities.
