North Korea vs. The United States
Engage in compromise
North Korea is among the most repressive countries in the world. The government prohibits all political and civil freedom, including freedom of religion, expression, and assembly. Since independence, North Korea’s government usually employs arbitrary arrests, torture, and execution as means of controlling and maintaining fear among the citizens (Song, 2018). Regardless of all the changes that have occurred in the world, North Korea has never thought of changing her governance structure. Therefore for the country to adopt liberalism, a compromise that uses economic, political, or cultural avenues to bring gradual change should be used. This strategy was successfully used in 1953 when the U.S engaged the authoritarian regime of Spain. In the case of North Korea, the U.S can offer economic support in exchange of gradually adopting liberalism. However, North Korea may refuse to negotiate because engaging in compromise does not subject her to any external pressure or threat. Nevertheless, compromising is preferable because does not require any fighting.
Arm internal opposition
One element that has strengthened North Korea’s authoritarian rule over the years is that foreign people viewed as a pro-democracy are usually denied entry into the country. As a result, invading the country using military force might be problematic. However, there are internal groups that wish to live under a liberal government. In May, 2019, a revolutionary group attacked North Korea’s embassy in Spain as a way of fighting against the country’s authoritarian rule (Hudson, 2019). Therefore, the U.S can train and arm such group with the aim of overthrowing the government and establishing a liberal democracy. This strategy was used to a great effect in Afghanistan in 1985. The main advantage of this strategy is that no U.S soldiers will die or get hurt because they will not be involved in the fighting. However, pro-democracy groups can be easily defeated because their resources and capacity are much less when compared with that of government forces.
