Executive Summary
The case study details the struggle of Santa Clara Pueblo to reclaim their ancestral land through their lead negotiator Mr. Alvin Warren. Previous attempts to reclaim the land had fallen through. Still, as Warren pursued the issue, he built alliances and accommodated the interests of other parties to strengthen his chance to repossess the land. At the moment, Warren has a chance to buy part of the ancestral land or leverage his strengths to push for the purchase of the entire land.
Background/ Diagnosis
At the heart of the negotiations is that the lead negotiator, Alvin Warren, is seeking to reacquire their ancestral land. There is a complex web of historical ownership and interests that are in the way of Warren’s goal. Historically, previous attempts to reacquire ancestral land were unsuccessful. However, this time, Warren had figured out a strategy that had a chance of achieving returning the land usage and ownership rights to his community.
After a lengthy process that has seen Warren get support and have a chance to get his ancestral land, he is in a dilemma on whether to settle for a part of the land or push to have the entire enclave rightfully owned by his ancestors return to them. The forest service has agreed to ‘assign’ Santa the right to buy its portion simultaneously with the forest service’s purchase of the rest of the Baca Ranch.
