China's Social Credit System
China's social credit system has been a philosophy to many scholars and has been well compared to a science fiction movie, black mirror. While the system appears to be one of the sophisticated practices to be used for monitoring the general public, the reality appears to be more complicated- and worse in some cases. The project was tested in 2007 and was later implemented in 2014, but it was not as successful as the scoring system of the government and the private sector. It was put on hold and organized to be officially launched in 2020. The system will be ranking and rewarding members of the public who perform well. It will also instill punishments procedures or blacklist those who have low scores. Even though the system will receive supreme credit, will it be inline with utilitarian theory? This discussion argues how CSCS will be a protagonist to the ethical lifestyle of people in China.
When social measures are made, they have to be looked up in various aspects to make sure they are a source of happiness and well being of the subordinates according to utilitarian theory. The government will authorize private social credit initiatives to keep track of data at its citizens' private levels. In this system, private data from delayed loan payments up leisure and hobby activities are strictly monitored. This is where the system becomes wacky. For example, if a person plays video games for more than 10 hours, he will be considered idle and will have to be monitored on what he does for a living (Creemers, 2018). According to the CSCS report in 2014, the system was to develop trustworthiness by use of four goals; improving honesty in government affairs, commercial integrity, judicial credibility, and social integrity (Maurtvedt, 2017).
