Moral Reasoning
Moral reasoning is the process whereby individuals use logic to decide and determine the difference between right and wrong. Moral reasoning provides principles that are used to make decisions on things to believe and accept as knowledge and things not to believe and reject as knowledge. Moral reasoning also applies ethical theories such as deontology to particular situations and dilemmas.
Moral reasoning can be viewed from two perspectives, consequentialist moral reasoning, and categorical moral reasoning. Consequentialist moral reasoning perceives moral virtues based on the act’s consequences, not considering the act itself. Categorical moral reasoning bases arguments rights and duties despite the consequences or results of the act. It is a type of deontological moral reasoning.
Of these two moral reasoning, I prefer the consequential moral reasoning approach because the actions are judged according to the results they produce. Consequential moral reasoning aims at achieving an equal share of happiness, which makes the decisions made by people objective. The end results from this reasoning are realistic and humane. The results end up in enhancing peace and unity in society. Following consequential moral reasoning, people are able to determine the outcomes of a particular action and thereby avoiding making some decisions (Armstrong, 2003). This can help in reducing accidents on the roads hence reducing the number of deaths. Also, consequential moral reasoning gives space for individual liberties, whereby people can make their own decisions that are not subject to the law (White, 2016). Last, consequential moral reasoning helps and aims to reduce harm from people’s choices in society, especially in cases of dilemma.
