Lockheed Martin Corporation prides itself on introducing some of the best ethical programs around with many companies striving to reach the same success. The company is unique because they continue to do self-improvement each year, widening the moral gap between them and their competitors. Good ethics equals good business and is at the heart of every unique business culture. Unethical and illegal workplace conduct, especially sexual harassment and racisms, have become standard today, and some go unreported and unresolved. However, this is quite different at Lockheed as they have developed a set of core values and strictly stick to them. They have employee training, hotlines, and a variety of written materials that guide the processes. Ethics at the company is not only a legal requirement but also part of their culture, leading to their success. The essay will evaluate the importance of their codes and employee training and involvement, how Lockheed makes the programs exciting, and, finally, the ways they measure success.
The ethical codes are vital because they provide an effective and efficient way to communicate ethical rules and regulations. They contain warning signs, quick quizzes, touches on all the ethical topics and angles, disciplinary actions, communication channels, emphasis on federal laws, and many other aspects that are vital in employee's good contact. They adopt a style that emphasizes the need for open communication and, most importantly, for information on the topic to flow freely (Terris, 2013, p.85). The code materials are also readily available and readable, with the most efficient one being the pocketbook that acts as a constant reminder and reference for ethical need. The more people read about and think about the moral codes, the better the chances they will do right by the company. The systems have receipt and acknowledgment forms that make it compulsory for all employees to know about the codes and to adhere to them strictly (Terris, 2013, p.83). They hold everyone in the corporation, including the top management accountable and responsible for any unethical behavior. The codes are essential because they enable unguarded communication, thus enabling speaking up and preventing the repetition of bad behavior. The laws are relevant because they generally ensure efficient communication, accountability, consistency, personal responsibility, and self-examination and improvement that contribute to the high ethical standards at Lockheed.
Lockheed has put much emphasis on employee's training and involvement because it is human nature and follows the rules and regulations you are familiar with because they speak to you. Ethical training is essential because it exposes the employee to awareness of values, rules, and regulations that guide their moral activities (Terris, 2013, p.88). Teaching employees what the company requires from them ensures full compliance.
