Social Problem With Relevance to Social Psychology
In this Assignment, you will conduct a library search for three peer-reviewed quantitative research articles that provide preliminary evidence of a social problem that has current relevance to social psychology (e.g., the effects of multitasking on task performance, internet addiction). At a minimum for each article, you must:
Provide a full APA 7 format reference
In your own words, clearly state the purpose of the study
Describe the specific research design used in the study
Identify the independent variable(s) (IVs) and dependent variable(s) (DVs)
Identify the authors’ hypotheses
Report the results of the study
Indicate whether you believe the results support the authors’ hypotheses
Your paper should not simply be an answer to each of the points just listed. Rather, you should integrate your answers into a cohesive, short paper describing each of the three studies and their findings.

(Note: Consult a librarian for tips on using search terms to access articles relevant to the social problem you have identified.)

Article #1: Bloemen, N., & De Coninck, D. (2020). Social media and fear of missing out in adolescents: The role of family characteristics. Social Media+ Society, 6(4), 1-11. https://doi.org/10.1177/2056305120965517
The purpose of this study is to examine the association between parenting styles, adolescent fear of missing out experiences, and family characteristics. In this way, the study recognizes that adolescents increasingly spend a significant share of their time on social media sites, thus the potential for addiction. The study used a quantitative non-experimental survey design to address the research questions. The researchers used online survey data from 831 Brussels and Flemish adolescents aged between thirteen to eighteen years to develop a structural equation framework to help in data analysis. The independent variables include parental relationship quality, parenting style, and family structure. The dependent variables include fear of missing out and social media usage.
The following research hypotheses guide this research:
H1: Adolescents from unified families experience insignificant fear of missing out than their counterparts from dysfunctional families.
H2: Adolescents with effective relationships with parents experience less fear of missing out compared to their counterparts with poor relationships with parents.
H3: Youths whose parents demonstrate effective relationships experience reduced fear of missing out compared to their counterparts whose parents demonstrated poor relationships.
H4: Lower fear of missing out correlates to a higher control degree.
H5.1: Social media usage mediates the link between fear of missing out and parental quality relationships, quality relationships with parents, and family structure.
H5.2: Adolescents that constantly use social media have higher levels of fear of missing out.
The results indicated that fear of missing out correlates to social media usage. Parenting style and family structure contribute to the fear of missing out, while perceived high-quality relationships between parents constitute a risk factor for fear of missing out. These results support the authors' hypotheses because they demonstrate that an adolescent's family background is linked to fear of missing out experiences, contributing to addiction to social media usage.
Article #2: Kostić, J. O., Pedović, I., & Stošić, M. (2022). Predicting social media use intensity in late adolescence: The role of attachment to friends and fear of missing out. Acta Psychologica, 229, 1-9. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2022.103667
The purpose of the study is to investigate the potential for predicting social media usage intensity anchored on the fear of missing out and peer attachment constructs (alienation, communication, and trust) in adolescents. This purpose is anchore...
