Strategic leadership denotes one's ability to articulate the organization's strategic vision while inspiring others to adopt the same vision as they strive to achieve organizational goals. On the other hand, strategic management refers to utilizing organizational resources, setting objectives, and executing controls to achieve the organization’s strategic goals while emphasizing efficiency and hierarchy. Leadership has to do with the ability to influence others in bearing the organization's vision, whereas management mainly deals with the execution of controls; thus, the two terms cannot be used interchangeably (Wilson, 1996). With strategic leadership, emphasis is on effectiveness, while strategic management emphasizes efficiency.
At Cape Fear Valley Hospital, where I have had the privilege of working, there are several scenarios where strategic leadership and strategic management processes can be put into play. Entrusting the top-level management of the hospital with the responsibility of setting the institution's goals, charting the workflows of the employees, and any other strategic function of the institution will amount to strategic management. On the other hand, strategic leadership would entrust the various responsibilities to people at different levels of management and not only the top-level managers. The expansion Valley Pavillion at Cape Fear Valley was an excellent demonstration of strategic leadership. The management had a well-laid-out plan for implementing the expansion. The plan was communicated well in time, and the focus throughout the communication process was on enhanced efficiency in service delivery to the people (Cape Fear Valley, 2022).
