The discussion paper is on an organization called Habitat for Humanity. It discusses significant environmental threats the organization faces. Further, the paper considers important opportunities that the organization faces. Moreover, it analyzes whether the threats outweigh the opportunities and vice versa. In the end, the paper discusses how the organization should respond to the threats it faces and how to take advantage of them.
Environmental threats.
The first environmental threat is Climate change. Climate change alters temperature and weather patterns (Masson et al., 2021). The changes can occur naturally, but most times, activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, like gas and oil, which humans carry out, have greatly influenced climate change. Dreadful weather changes such as floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes can cause awful results for families. Families may be at a loss of their homes, raising other threats such as diseases and displacements. The results of climate change include; water scarcity, droughts, rising sea levels, and flooding.
The second environmental threat is deforestation and forest degradation. Deforestation is the action of cutting down forests (Finer et al., 2018). The main reason for deforestation is the urge to do agriculture. The increasing population puts pressure to create more farmland, which destroys trees. The main reason for forest degradation is the unlawful logging of trees. Deforestation and forest degradation have severe negative impacts, including; loss of employment, increased Greenhouse gases, and soil erosion. Climate change and deforestation are threats that have affected Habitat for Humanity. Before constructing and designing homes for the homeless, they must consider the climate changes experienced in the area. This ensures the constructed houses are not destroyed because of the adverse climate.
Opportunities.
Some of the opportunities faced by Habitat for Humanity include; increased awareness of the needs of the homeless. Through their organizations worldwide, Habitat for Humanity has spread the word about the need to build houses for the homeless. They have gathered several people who have given donations and others willing to partner with them towards the project. The donations come in various kinds, including; furniture, household goods, building materials, and money. The second opportunity is development in design technology and construction. Habitat is constructing energy-efficient, sustainable houses for communities around the world. Through partnerships, it has been able to develop and build thousands of houses that are durable, have quality indoor air, and are energy efficient.
