Should the Hospitality Industry End the Practice of Tipping?

“Should the hospitality industry end the practice of tipping?”
If this topic does not interest you, you may choose your own. However, you need to ask me for approval ASAP
(by Week 6), and you will need to do much more research.
Instructions:
Write an outline for a persuasive essay. Your outline should include:
 Topic
 Thesis
 Three supporting points
 For each supporting point, write one or two sentences explaining your idea and/or telling me how
you plan to prove it (what evidence will you use?).
 For each supporting point, name of at least one article (or other research source) that you plan to
use as proof, and tell me a bit about that article.
Use complete sentences. See Blackboard for an example of a good outline.
Research Sources:
On Blackboard, there are several articles on the topic of tipping. You may use any or all of these articles as
sources. However, you must also do some research on your own. Your source(s) must be credible and relevant
to your argument. I recommend using the George Brown Library website to find articles.
Altogether, you must list at least three sources in your outline, and at least one should be an article you found by
yourself (not one of the articles I posted on Blackboard).

Topic: Are smartphones good for children?
Thesis: Children should not be given smartphones because they’re bad for their health and
safety.
Supporting Point #1: Smartphones can be psychologically damaging for kids.
 When all kids have smartphones, it’s hard to avoid cyberbullying. Also, too much smart
phone use can hurt their social skills.
 Research Source: “The Bully in the Backpack” by Debra Lau Whelan – This article
shows that smartphones increase bullying.
Supporting Point #2: Smartphones are bad for children’s physical health.
 Kids are exercising less because they only want to play with their smartphones. This is
leading to increasing childhood obesity.
 Research Source: “Children who spend hours glued to their smartphones are more
likely to be sleep-deprived and obese” by Ben Spencer – This article discusses a study
from Harvard University which shows that children who use their phones for more
than five hours a day have a 43% greater risk of being obese.
Supporting Point #3: Smartphones can put kids in dangerous situations.
 Kids often use their smartphones while walking, causing them not to watch for traffic
when they cross the street. Phones also give predators more access to kids.
 Research Source: “Smartphones and the Rise of Child Accidents” by John Henley –
This article shows that children with phones are more likely to be hit by a car while
walking to school.
