I want to spend more time on the 1995 paper by Gupta entitled "Blurred Boundaries: The Discourse of Corruption, the Culture of Politics, and the Imagined State." Please read this paper first.
In the next few weeks, we encounter ideas of Gupta, Ferguson, and Malkki. Each of them is concerned with how to understand the forces at work in a society that take place on a larger, indeed global, scale. So what they say will resonate with ideas we have been discussing all semester, especially our discussion of the global capitalist system. I want us to discuss what they have to say about the state, especially the system of nation-states in which we all live today. States and nations create maps of the world of their own, often ones that conflict with the world-pictures generated by people's involvement in different kinds of global economic systems.

Akhil Gupta’s reading relates to the main concepts learned from the coursework perspective. The author says interesting aspects about states in relation to the world and how a country’s action affects citizens in the specific state. The case study used in the article is India. Gupta attempts to evaluate the state’s ethnography by looking at the corruption element from the contemporary context.
