. Chapter 9 introduces and discusses the concepts of Ethos (appeals from character; think expert, credible, ethical), Pathos (appeals to emotion; think passion), and Logos (appeals to reason; think logic).
1. Select one of the points (arguments) you will need to make in support of your position on the topic & issue you've selected. This is my argument about vaping being dangerous: Nicotine is still an addictive drug. While not all e-cigarettes contain nicotine, most do. Nicotine impacts the neurotransmitters in the brain, causing addictive cravings and behavior.
Electronic cigarettes still emit carcinogens. E-cigarettes use liquid nicotine, a highly dangerous substance even in small doses (far more dangerous than tobacco leaves themselves). Some testing suggests that some vaporizers release toxic metals during use.
The industry is relatively unregulated. These products are not subject to FDA approval and, according to some experts, they have not been studied thoroughly enough to understand potential risks.
There are potentially dangerous advertisements to young people. Studies have shown that e-cigarette ads reach more than 50 percent of 12 to 17-year-olds, and they are promoting addictive habits to young people.
The act of smoking is habit-forming. Almost all experts agree that the physical activities associated with smoking are habit-forming, without the help of tobacco or nicotine. This makes arguments about e-cigarettes helping smokers quick seem flawed, and also could promote negative habits among previous non-smokers.
2. Write 3 different paragraphs about the same point or argument:
- one that represents an argument employing Ethos,
- one that represents an argument employing Pathos, and
- one that represents Logos.
Even though these 3 paragraphs are about the same point, consider this to be an essay in that it should be composed with all the formality, care, and attention to detail I have requested / expected in previous writing tasks (formal and informal) - APA document format adherence, citation of outside sources, a References page at the end, written in 3rd person, proper mechanics, grammar and other conventions. Vaping is a mode of drug consumption where the individual inhales the vapor produced by an e-cigarette. The main intent for creating this product is to provide a better and safer alternative to traditional smoking however, is vaping any better than tobacco products? CITATION Joh19 \l 1033 (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2019) Since being born, an individual is told about the dangers of smoking tobacco and marijuana, at school and at home. This constant reinforcement makes the kids grow up following the orders of the parents and teachers but in their mind, they have questions. Vaping companies assure the consumes that the mode of smoking has no side effect and it is completely safe. A teenager’s curiosity will be triggered and given how the companies go to lengths to advertise their products, the teen is likely to pick up the habit. The vaping companies like Juul use flavors to make the smoke sweet and use younger models to advertise their products, making it seem cool. CITATION Pau19 \l 1033 (Paul, 2019) It is scary that this product can easily find its way to a child and they are able to smoke it freely due to the lack of any stigma around it, unlike traditional cigarettes. Extra measures should be taken to ensure that the companies don’t have the power to lure and influence non-users and that any individual should buy it on their own free will. Vaping in public places should be made illegal and parents should stress the dangers of smoking altogether. We cannot try to eradicate the tobacco smoking killer habit by introducing another killer habit.
Pathos
The main belief the vaping associated companies promote is that the e-cigarette and the vaping mode of smoking are cleaner and safer than the traditional cigarettes and mode of smoking. However, this is so far from the truth because nicotine is a very addictive drug no matter which way it is administered. What these companies have managed to do is to is play down the dangers of smoking and encouraged the habit by making it easier and convenient to smoke.
