RE: PEER REVIEW OF THE PROPOSAL ON WASTEWATER TREATMENT
The proposal is geared towards finding a solution to the treatment of drinking and wastewater in a more efficient and cheaper means. As such, the authors propose an investigation of zeolites. Investigating zeolites, a natural product, will help understand their ion exchange properties. The proposers seek whether industries can utilize zeolites to sequester three varying metal ions, including Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II), from water during decontamination. Although zeolite clinoptilolite has been found by earlier researchers useful in sequestering other metals ions, its ability to ion-exchange with the mentioned heavy metals needs further research. The originality of this proposal lies in the fact that the researchers seek to close this gap in research by generating new data, methods, theories, and approaches for treating water.
The proposers’ intentions are important for reducing the current high costs of decontaminating water in Canada. Millions of dollars are spent on supporting the current methods of water purification. Zeolite is a naturally available material hence will be cheaper to mine and utilize in the process. Therefore, if the researchers successfully eliminate ions of the mentioned hard metals, the country's government will save millions of dollars for use in other sectors.
