Rationale
The primary reason that an individual is interested to focus on the topic of using ocean fibers in the fashion industry is to foster the use of sustainable materials and eliminate adverse environmental impacts. In reality, traditional fashion has proved to be detrimental to the environment due to the use of vast quantities of water, energy, and toxic chemicals in textile production, particularly in the dyeing and finishing processes. The industry also emits significant amounts of greenhouse gases through clothing production, transportation, and disposal. Harmful chemical substances, such as bleaches, solvents, and dyes used in manufacturing clothes usually end up in waterways, affecting aquatic life adversely. Additionally, synthetic fabrics, including nylon, acrylic, and polyester are made from petrochemicals, which are non-biodegradable (Rouch, 2021).
In that light, using ocean fibers is the solution to reduce adverse environmental impacts. Fashion designers should turn to sustainable materials, such as ocean fiber, which is made from algae and seaweed (Gazzola et al., 2020). The primary benefits of these resources are that they are naturally abundant, biodegradable, eco-friendly, renewable, and do not require any chemicals to produce. Ocean fibers are perfect sustainable alternatives to nylon, polyester, cotton, and other petrochemicals used in the fashion industry.
