In the study of McAuley and Courneya (1994), they presented the need for the development and validation of the three-factor Subjective Exercise Experience Scale (SEES) to measure the responses of the body with regards to assessing the subjective psychological responses of exercise stimuli. Specifically, exercise's positive and negative effects on the psychological health, positive well-being, and psychological distress of the respondents to quantify different subjective states and feeling that resulted from exercise. Added by McAuley and Courneya (1994), there are multiple literatures that examined a person’s responses to exercise; however, only a few literatures attempted to assess a person’s psychological responses. In their study, they conducted three studies with three different methodological design to support the validation of the three-factor measure of the participant's subjective responses.
In their first study, about 454 (189 males; 265 females) graduate students (M= 20.78 years), participated in the physical activity class where an 11-point scale was used to assess the overall effects of exercise. Their findings suggest an overall increase in positive well-being, overall decrease in psychological distress, but an increase in physical exhaustion and fatigue.
In their second study, about 100(49 males; 51 females) middle aged (M= 53.34 years) respondents, participated in the program where the SEES was scores using a 7-point Likert scale. Their results suggest that there is a significant increase in the overall positive well-being of the participants based from the acquired t values in the data analysis. It was important to note that the there is also a significant increase in the fatigue of the participants.
