Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept:
Professional Nursing Judgment (PNJ) is a concept central to nursing practice and involves the nurse making decisions that are in their patient's best interest. It is a decision-making process that involves critical thinking, clinical expertise, and knowledge of the patient’s values, goals, and needs (Papathanasiou et al., 2014). PNJ requires the nurse to consider multiple factors and make decisions in the context of the nursing profession's ethical, legal, and professional obligations.
Three defining attributes:
1. The capacity for critical thinking – PNJ requires a nurse to think critically and synthesize information from multiple sources (Papathanasiou et al., 2014). This includes identifying and analyzing issues, weighing the evidence, and drawing conclusions based on sound knowledge and reasoning.
2. Clinical decision making – PNJ also involves making informed clinical decisions based on sound evidence and best practices. This involves integrating professional knowledge, clinical experience, and patient preferences to choose appropriate courses of action.
3. Professional responsibility – PNJ also requires nurses to assume responsibility for their actions and decisions. This includes ensuring that their practice is based on accepted standards of care, maintaining their ethical and legal obligations, and advocating for their patients.

Consequence: PNJ is associated with improved patient outcomes in several studies. It is associated with increased nurse confidence, better patient satisfaction, and improved communication between nurses and patients.
Model Case:
A model case of PNJ can be seen in the case of a patient with a complex diagnosis. In this situation, the nurse must use their PNJ to evaluate the patient’s symptoms, analyze test results, and assess the patient’s medical history to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the best course of treatment (Toney-Butler & Unison-Pace, 2022). The nurse needs to think critically and employ their clinical expertise to weigh the evidence and draw conclusions based on sound kno...
