Obesity and Overweight in American Populace: A Case Study
Introduction
According to one estimate, the ratio of obesity in the United States is 2:5 for adults and 1:5 for children. Based on health experts' opinions, obesity creates severe serious health complications, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer (Healthy People, 2021). In Florida, the average proportion of obese and overweight persons is 28 and 36%, respectively, and by 2030, the proportion of people with healthy weight will reduce from 34 to 30% (Florida Department of Health, 2022). The following discussion provides details of a specific segment of the Miami, Florida, populace vulnerable to excessive obesity and overweight.
Description of the Vulnerable Population
The community under discussion is located in the northern district of Miami; demographically, it is a multiethnic populace, and the target segment of the current discussion is obese middle-aged people. Based on data collected by CDC, approximately 67.4% of the adult population suffers from overweight and obesity (StudyCorgi, 2021). Obesity is linked with specific community environments, individual behaviors and tendencies, and the prevalence of specific dietary habits and physical activities. Based on CDC's estimate, more than 25% of adults in this population do not engage in physical activities within 30 days. Moreover, their intake of high-caloric junk is higher than the average intake of people of the same age group.
In the same way, the excessive presence of fast-food restaurants in the vicinity of adult neighborhoods also contributes to the development of weight issues in adults (StudyCorgi, 2021). Since this locality is a hotspot for tourist activities, the influx of guests is higher than in any other locality; for the same reason, the ratio of using services of the fast-food restaurant is proportionally higher (StudyCorgi, 2021). According to the estimates of one research, 56% of the adults in the vicinity of fast-food restaurants are overweight, and 10% have cardiovascular issues (Jiao et al., 2015). Thus, one may infer that the locality's socioeconomic fabric also increases the vulnerability of the target populace to obesity.
Programs to Address Vulnerability to Obesity
The Healthy People objective that aims to resolve the problem of obesity in middle-aged adults is NSW-8. To address the growing cases of obesity in the adult population of Northern Miami, initiation of healthcare programs at community, state, and national levels is imperative.
Community Level Initiative
Since this community health program aims to eliminate the possibility of the development of obesity, it also focuses on the prevention of obesity in children. For the same reason, local authorities have established school vending machines encouraging students to buy only healthy food (StudyCorgi, 2021). Under this community program, Miami-Dade County provides financial support for constructing parks, fitness centers, and swimming ...
