Introduction
Bedside shift reporting is a relatively novel way of reconciling and passing on of information between incoming and offgoing nurses and their patients. Handoff procedures vary across different hospital settings, and each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. For this section of the capstone project, existing research will be reviewed and compared against each other. The integration of bedside shift reporting in hospital settings, regardless of the unit type, has proven to have different degrees of impacts on stakeholders, primarily patients and the nurses. Because of the differences of nursing units across the country, the adaptation and the subsequent research conducted about bedside shift reporting has provided different findings that show significant insights that can improve protocol development.
Comparison of Research Questions
Of the selected articles from the literature evaluation, the research questions vary depending on the goal of the researchers. Multiple aspects and possible outcomes of bedside shift reporting (BSR) implementation were studied by researchers within their own focus. Research like Schirm et al. (2018) focused on the impacts of applying evidence-based practice (EBP) for the implementation of BSR in clinical practices. By focusing on this aspect, they were able to assess how much EBP is being applied to BSR, and what key outcomes differentiate application vs. non-application of EBP in the practice. Other researchers such as Mitchell et al. (2018) focused mainly on the communication aspect of BSR. Arguably, communication is central to BSR because it involves the transfer of information from care givers to the patients. Focusing on this key aspect allowed the researchers to identify specific gaps in the implementation of BSR. Other researchers took a perspective approach in studying BSR. For example, Bigani et al. (2018) aimed to gather the perceptions of nurses, patients, and family members of patients. This allowed the researchers to gather an additional insight from the people who are also affected by information transparency during handoffs, aside from the nurses and the patients.
Comparison of Sample Populations
The sample populations used by the researchers in their respective studies were based on the institutions they were assessing, as well as the research design they used for their research. For research that are qualitative and descriptive such as Mitchell et al.’s (2018) study, their samples were mainly based on existing, relevant research, which means that their samples came from a pool of samples.
