Leadership plays an instrumental role in improving healthcare because it empowers healthcare professionals to deliver quality patient care. According to Malila et al. (2018), through positive, ethical, and transparent leadership, the healthcare system can deal with the economic and technological changes that greatly influence the delivery of care. Understanding how leadership influences collaboration and cooperation is imperative.
The statement "We become most powerful when we give our own power away" has various implications for leaders. The first implication is that leaders can only influence others by empowering them to be their best selves. According to Kouzes and Posner (2017), leaders who give their followers more opportunities to make decisions and execute them can develop more competent and confident followers. It fosters collaboration and influences people to make the best decisions because they realize that they are responsible for their failures and/or success while on the job. The second implication is that leadership is not about controlling others. It is not about being in control. It is about giving control to others. It is about allowing others to be in control of whatever they do (Kouzes & Posner, 2017). When followers have control over their actions, they can solve issues independently, rather than waiting for their leaders to solve the issues for them. Thus, there is efficiency and effectiveness because issues that would otherwise take too long to be solved by one leader are solved fast by each follower. The third implication is that leadership is not about the leader and what he can accomplish. It is about the followers and what they can accomplish. The followers' accomplishments are a reflection of the leaders' accomplishments.
Teams succeed only when there is a climate of trust among co-workers, team leaders, and team members. Leaders can create a climate of trust by treating others the way they would want to be treated. Leaders should foster openness and confidentiality (Dye, 2017). Openness means creating an environment where team members can share their ideas and challenges without being judged. Confidentiality means ensuring that anything that a team member shares in confidence is not disclosed to others. This is especially important because it shows others that the leader can be trusted. In addition, supporting others, being accountable, and showing empathy to others can be proof that a leader can be trusted (Dye, 2017). Leaders should also incorporate reciprocation to show that they trust others. Kouzes and Posner (2017) indicate that reciprocity is allowing others to give back. For instance, reciprocity can be demonstrated in accountability. If a leader holds team members accountable for their actions, he should also allow them to hold him accountable for his actions.
There are many steps that leaders can take to develop the competencies and confidence of their followers. One, leaders c...
