Surgical procedures and operations are demanding tasks and many patients are often anxious and agitated fearing the worst. As such, they at times contribute in complicating the procedures and either worsening their conditions or resulting in their deaths. One notable way that could help mitigate on this is through pre-operative education from the nurses to patients on post-operative instructions.
Patient/ Population Problem
Health care costs are increasing drastically and as such, many patients are significantly impeded from receiving quality health care. As such, it has become essential to find ways to ensure patients recover as quickly as possible and so to shorten their hospital stay. The initiative is not only cost-effective on patients but also on health care facilities that save on their limited resources. Research indicates that many patients’ surgical patients are often plagued by anxiety and various complications including infections and chronic pain after their procedures (Liebner, 2015). They are also more likely to get readmitted either for the same ailments they were suffering from or new complications. Nurses working in pre-operative departments of acute care inpatient hospitals and handling both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures usually fail to enlighten their patients on what to expect after. Therefore, these post-operative issues are associated with insufficient post-operative information that surgical patients obtain from their health care practitioners.
Interventions
The intervention proposed in this study is to provide nursing staff with updated educational information obtained by the surgeons about the various post-operative care necessary for the different procedures they perform at our facility. Consequently, nurses will be in positions to disseminate these pieces of information to their patients before the surgical procedures are performed on them.
