PHE 101 Public Health Interventions Worksheet

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Prompt: You will examine public health interventions published in scholarly literature for how they addressed your selected public health issue.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
III. Public Health Interventions
A. Analyze at least two published public health interventions used to address the issue, describing both the interventions and the theoretical basis
of each. In other words, what were the intervention strategies used to address this problem and what was the rationale (the thinking behind the
strategy, why the strategy works) for those actions, according to your resource?
B. Explain how the selected interventions reflect primary, secondary, and/or tertiary intervention strategies for public health prevention.
C. Explain how the interventions address and/or mitigate the social determinants of the issue (health and healthcare disparities associated with
each). Remember that social determinants are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age.
Use the Public Health Interventions Worksheet to enter your descriptions. Your instructor will review your work and provide feedback and possibly suggestions.
Note that the same worksheet will also be used for completing Milestone Four in Module Five.

Use of Health Assistants and Outreach teams

ECDC (2017). Examples of interventions to manage tuberculosis in vulnerable groups. Europa. Accessed on 5 June 2017 from http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/healthtopics/Tuberculosis/world-tb-day/Pages/Interventions-examples.aspx

The theoretical basis of the intervention:

The use of health assistance and outreach team is based on case management theoretical perspective which requires coordinated, integrated and advocate for individuals, families, and group to ensure that patients receive individualized care that is cost effective to ensure that the tuberculosis patients complete their treatments without interruptions and within the shortest time possible. Therefore, the local health assistants and outreach team will be able to talk to the patients, monitor the patients' adherence to treatment, contact tracing, take the patient to doctors for treatment and get the drugs for the patients. These interventions also influence the primary level of intervention whereby the communities who are not infected are protected. This is achieved through seclusion of the patients not to interact with the public as well as proper ventilation, especially in hospitals.

Strategy level(s):

Health assistants and outreach teams are an integrated team-based approach that is normally implemented at primary, secondary and tertiary levels where patients with confirmed tuberculosis are treated and management is done with proper follow ups.
The primary level intervention involves avoidance of behaviors that put the public at risk of infections. These activities include smoking cigarettes, alcohol consumption while the secondary intervention level ensures that the outreach teams perform early detection and management through screening programs.

How the intervention addresses social determinants:

The use of health assistants and outreach teams are centered on individuals. However, they have greater impacts on the entire population if such are universally applied. Even though the immediate impact might be minimal, the long term impact can be achieved through improved health, reduced infection and healthcare costs. Therefore, the strategy when geared towards addressing the socioeconomic factors would impact positively to health improvement. Since they will change the individual's behavior as well as aim at curing the illness.

Public health organizations involved:

The various public health organizations that are involved include the governments, community health workers forum, world health organization (WHO), World Bank, and United Nations Children’s Fund.

Subdisciplines involved:

The sub-disciplines involved include the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as care international, doctors without borders, population servi...
