The current ratio equals current assets divided by current liabilities being 2.05 in 2010 (2,360,000/1,150,000) and 1.62 (2,195,000/1,350,000) in 2011. The working capital also shows the same trend with the year 2010 having better results than 2011. The ratio shows whether an organization can meet short- term obligations as they fall due without having to sell inventory (Weil et al., 2013). Then higher the ratio the better it is for the hospital as this shows that the organization is better able to cover the cost of current liabilities with minimal difficulty (Weil et al., 2013). However, the current ratio fell from 2010 to 2011, showing that the management of Trinity Hospital needs to find ways to meet short- term obligations without interfering with the hospital’s current assets.
Even though, the organization is tax exempt, if the ability to pay for current liabilities as thy fall due, worsens then this could lead to cash shortage in the future (Weil et al., 2013). In any case, the cash at bank reduce from $ 2,360,000 to 1,445,000 in 2011. Furthermore, delayed disbursement of grants negatively affects the organization’s ability to meet the short-term liabilities, as there is reduced cash in hand. In 2011, there were delayed grants of $ 500,000 while in 2010 there were ...
