Eczema is a condition of the chronic dry skin that may be characterized by red color and sore in different parts of the body. Most people have limited information about this chronic condition that can either be mild, moderate or severe. Eczema has significant negative effects on the quality of daily life, and also time and efforts necessary to put it under control (Edward A. Glasper A., Jane Coad, Jim Richardson, 2015).
The main symptom of eczema is the itch that results in scratching and a consistent cycle of itch-scratch. Its severity varies from one child to another. School-age children with mild to moderate eczema experience patches in the elbow, areas around the wrists, around the ankles and also behind the knees. However, children with severe eczema may be affected from the head to toes. It is also important to note that eczema changes from day to day (Sandra Lawton, 2014).
The effects of eczema such as constant scratching on head and face, bleeding from scratching and itching can adversely affect classroom attendance for the infected children. This, therefore, calls for all those involved in the care of children to take various steps to ensure the comfortable life for the kids with eczema. The teachers can work closely with parents in observing any instances of children scratching certain parts of their bodies and further identify the possible causes of itch and tiredness. The teachers can also keep the children busy by often letting them do different activities. Keeping the kids busy is a productive way of distracting the instances of scratching. Besides, the school can eliminate possible triggers of eczema such as soap and water, too cold or hot temperatures, sweat, dust, and others. (Lawton, 2014).
