One rule that has significant implications on the nursing field is the public charge rule. This is a rule that the Department of Homeland Security set, and it determines whether immigrants can become a public charge once they get a green card. A public charge means that the person has access to certain public benefits, for instance, Medicaid benefits. The immigrant can also receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which acts as a type of debt payment that they can use to buy foodstuffs from authorized retailers (Perreira et al., 2018). When nurses offer their services, they have to encounter different situations and patients. It also means that a nurse has to be at the forefront of initiating policy changes to benefit patients while improving their health outcomes. The rule is an issue of contention since it would mean that legal immigrants are not being treated fairly despite being on the pathway to citizenship. The rule is a barrier that makes it harder to care for the injured and sick, and it will have a long-term effect since it would be harder to keep people healthy. The public charge rule means that people who are enrolled in SNAP or Medicaid will not be permanent residents, which means that they cannot get a green card (Perreira et al., 2018). The policy will be used to exclude and screen out low-income immigrants who would be a disadvantage to the public since they will still be poot in the future.

Idea for Addressing Solution

The public charge rule has resulted in a reduction in participation among immigrant families. The problem can be solved by new legislation that will change the policy so that it does to discourage people from accessing social services that would be important for their health outcomes. Immigrants consist of 10% of the workforce, and they need to be considered in social services such as Medicaid and SNAP just like other citizens. Legislations are the ideal way to deal with the issue since the policy arises from government regulations (Perreira et al., 2018). The problem can be handled through official channels such as appeals to officials in congress and the government. The public charge rule affects individuals who have been admitted into the U.S. legally even though they are not citizens, and the issue can only be solved through a legal process (Perreira et al., 2018). One of the first steps towards aching a solution is creating a unified group that would oppose the proposed public charge rule. The unified group will include nurses from different backgrounds and locations who can work together as an interest group who will influence the legislation (Martinez-Donate et al., 2017). For instance, nurses can share their first-hand experiences in public proceedings, such as how immigrants are impacted and who many people will lose from the social benefits.
