Part 1: Supporting ELL Students
Use students from your field experience classroom and the "ELL Case Studies" to discuss ELL instructional strategies with your mentor teacher. You may consult other teachers at your field experience site to gather additional information or work with multiple teachers if needed. Include the following in your discussion:
What are some strategies you use to teach foundational reading skills (concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics and fluency) to ELLs?
What strategies do you use for vocabulary development and student practice?
What are some strategies you use to teach the elements of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics) to ELLs?
How do you use Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in ELL instruction?
At least two additional questions to discuss with the teacher.
Observe at least one Grade K-8 classroom. The classroom must have English language learners. Work with an individual student or small group of students identified with your mentor teacher during Clinical Field Experience A. If possible, focus on instructional or support activities related to the discussion with your mentor. Examples of activities include conducting a reading mini-lesson targeting a foundational reading skill; providing vocabulary instruction and practice within a content area; creating a targeted lesson based on student data to address a discrete element of language; and administering an assessment as a part of progress monitoring.
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Part 2: Plan and Reflect
Following the observation, discuss with your mentor teacher the progress made and next steps for working with the student or group of students. Plan how you will continue to support the students during the next field experience. Collaborate on how you can respect and promote the linguistic and cultural differences of the individual learners you are working with.
Write a 250-500 word reflection summarizing your observations and discussion. Include a reflection of how you supported the language acquisition needs of the students you worked with. Address how what you have learned will affect your future professional practice. Include how you will support the student or group of students in additional field experiences.

The strategies used to teach foundational reading skills include reading to students frequently, teaching alphabets, supporting the student comprehension, teaching phonics, using audiobooks, supporting the native language literacy, and encouraging reading outside classroom sessions and establishment of an English language learning center (Kaplan, 2019). The English language learning center will equip the students with the learning resources such as ESL notebooks, picture dictionaries, tape recorders, and earphones that will aid the students to learn. Reading students daily is also another vital strategy for developing their foundational reading skills. Also, supporting the student's comprehension through reading techniques as a teacher will aid the students in developing their reading skills. Fourthly, the teaching of alphabets will aid in building the learner's letter identification. Teaching phonics is also a vital element that will aid in the development of reading skills. It aids in reinforcing certain recognition of letters that will aid in foundational reading skills. Frequently checking comprehension is also another strategy that will assist the students in learning and deciding accurate texts that are vital in developing their reading skills. Audiobooks are also another vital resource as they contain stories and they assist in developing the reading skills among the ELL students. Integrating the native language is also another way that assists in easier development. The use of the native language will build a rich vocabulary base in developing reading skills. Lastly, is encouraging reading outside classes as it aids in the development of the student's reading skills, which can be done by using the library resources.
Ten strategies are used for vocabulary development. They include singing songs, using cognates, labels of items, speaking to the students with a rich vocabulary, playing vocabulary games, teaching prefixes, introducing word pairs, and seizing teachable moments (McClymont, 2017). Singing songs is one of the easiest ways that allows the student to grasp easily and have rich vocabulary content. Second, the use of the cognate is whereby, as a teacher, one uses words in the two languages with similar meaning and pronunciation. The third method is labeling items in classrooms, and an example is the use of posters and maps as they easily assist the student in learning. Speaking to the students with language rich in vocabulary is another way to empower the student in vocabulary. Teaching is also another successful way to ensure that the students are equipped with the vocabulary. Sixth is relying on the text rich with vocabulary, and reading aloud to the ELL students will also assist the students in the class to learn the vocabulary. Plating vocabulary game is also another strategy used to ensure that the ELL students can grasp the vocabulary content.
