Research Methods: Observational Study using Naturalistic Observation

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

One of the best ways to learn about observation research is to conduct some. This week’s Journal Activity will have you conduct your own observational study using naturalistic observation. In using a naturalistic observation, you should observe people who you do not know in a public setting. You should not interact with the people you are collecting data on and you should not collect any identifying information on the individuals you are observing.
For this activity, choose a public area where there are people for at least fifteen minutes (e.g., mall, restaurant, café, park) for your study. Then, create a research question and hypothesis that has to do with people's potential behaviors in this environment. Next, identify what specific behaviors you want to collect data on to test your hypothesis.
Find a crowded area where there are people for at least fifteen minutes (e.g., mall, restaurant, baseball game, or waiting room). Then, create a research question and hypothesis that has to do with people's behaviors in this environment. Next, identify what specific behaviors you want to collect data on to test your hypothesis.
Using the Unit 7 Journal Template, collect 15 minutes of data and in 1-2 pages, present the following information:
Your research question
Your hypothesis
15 minutes of collected data
A summary of how you interpret the data and if it confirms or disconfirms your hypothesis
You can present 15 minutes of collected data in a paragraph or in a table format. Your response needs to make it clear that your observation lasted for at least 15 minutes and that your data is spanning this time frame. You do not need to run any statistical analyses on the data you collect.

Unit 7 Journal: Observational Research
* What is your research question?
Are the people who come in at coffee places in the morning always in a rush?
* What is your hypothesis?
If the people who come in at coffee places are always in a rush, then few people would stay in the coffee place for a few minutes (in contrast to those who take their coffees to go and leave immediately).
* Provide a summary of the data that you collected during your 15 minutes of observation.
For the data collection, a naturalistic observational research method was conducted. In naturalistic observational research, the researchers do not announce themselves to the subjects (Bakshi, 2018). This was done not to influence the data to be collected but to summarize or present reality on a smaller scale (Eby, 2011). I conducted my observation at a local coffeehouse near a university. I started my observation at around 8 in the morning and did it for over 30 min.
• Person 1 (casual clothes, with bag) came in at 8 am with her MacBook in her hand, ordered a coffee, and stayed on a table to work using her computer.
• Person 2 (casual clothing) came in at around 8:03 am rushing, got his coffee to go, and left immediately.
• Person 1 started taking her pens and notebooks out at around 8:05 am and started taking notes from her computer.
• Person 3 (smart casual clothing) came in at 8:13 am, set down her book at a table, we...
