Newsletter for Families of ELLs Explaining Education Assessment Practices

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Communication with families of ELLs can be challenging but it is vital for student success and family engagement. Many families may be unfamiliar with the standard practices of education in this country. Understanding assessment and how assessment data is used can be particularly difficult to discuss depending on the families’ previous experience with assessment in other educational settings.
Create a digital newsletter for families of ELLs to explain assessment practices. Consider how you communicate the information for non-native English-speaking families. Include the following in your newsletter:
Description of each type of assessment (diagnostic, formative, and summative), including how and when each will be used to support English language instruction
Explanation of alignment of the assessments to ELP and content standards and the use of assessment data to determine student progress in both language and content
Description of testing accommodations for ELLs
Discussion of how the data from assessments will be used to inform instructional decisions and planning, including enrichment and interventions
Identify strategies to communicate timely and meaningful feedback with students and families, including student self-reflection strategies
Support your newsletter with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Assessment involves teaching, learning, and tracking students' progress. Without adequate assessment, instructors cannot determine the types of assistance needed by learners. Some of the assessment methods that determine students’ kill levels include diagnostic, formative, and summative.
The diagnostic assessment determines a learner's prior knowledge, skills, areas of strength, and weakness. It highlights the issue with a certain instructional style and then offers suggestions for how the delivery quality might be improved. Pre-assessment tests that provide a snapshot or knowledge to screen students comprise some examples of diagnostic assessments. While summative assessment measures students' knowledge after a subject has been taught, formative assessment is used to gather information on learners' comprehension throughout the learning process to assist teachers in changing their tactics.
When ELL newcomers first enroll, schools conduct assessments to decide where to place them in terms of grade level, curriculum, and teachers (Bajaj & Suresh, 2018). The evaluation goes above and beyond the general data gathered during enrolment to be in harmony with English Level Proficiency (ELP). The data and content are useful in determining the level of student's English proficiency, but they should be used with caution. The reason is that they frequently lack specific information on various matters considered important to instructors, students' academic and linguistic performance in English, and their native languages.
Testing ELLs is crucial because it can demonstrate that students have learned the material being taught (Vaughn et al., 2017) Teaching the terms that ELLs will need to know to use the learning platform is mentioned in the exam description. If possible, a word wall with the terms, definitions, an image, and a translation into the student's native language might be posted to help learners remember the terms. To determine if studen...
