Religion Conflicts and Violence
Religious conflict is a critical societal problem that has raised many eyebrows in contemporary society. In the past decade, there has been an increased level of religious violence which has affected different populations in the community (Lindgren & Sonnenschein, 2021). The rise in the religious problem affects different religious groups globally, ranging from Muslims to Christians. According to a minority report, religious conflicts may sometimes lead to atrocities and mass killings that affect different countries due to religious dominance (Svensson, 2021). Society may record bloody encounters during religious conflicts and violence. Unfortunately, religion should be at the forefront of establishing peace and love, leading to societal divisions and disagreements. Social scientists are divided regarding religion and conflict due to the contradicting impacts. For instance, extremists embrace theological actions, justifying common violent aggressions and intolerances (Gorur & Gregory, 2021). Different scientists believe that religion sanctifies martyrdom and fuels certainties, while others believe it is a source of peace. The paper probes religious conflict as a societal problem and proposes practical solutions to improve the situation with appropriate evidence and ethical consideration. Religious beliefs catalyze global violence and conflicts; thus, it is necessary to establish a link to peace in contemporary society.
Background Information
Religious conflict and violence are linked to the establishment of the religion concept in the 17th century (Svensson, 2021). The concept of religion is linked to the virtue of worship and was established in the medieval world. However, the intense religious conflicts originate from the modern concept of religion, and it is an abstraction that contains different doctrines and beliefs in contemporary society. The modern concept of religion has resulted in religious conflicts and violence since it focused on protestant reformation and unique beliefs incorporated in the old religious beliefs with varying definitions and integrations of beliefs. In the 17th century, the modern concept was reshaped, with Muslims and Christianity being the most embraced religions. The primary origin of conflicts among the two religions originated from the concept of ‘holy war,’ which was differently interpreted by Muslims and Christians.
In Islam, holy war was a concept that was adequately accepted due to different quests and expansion of the Islam community in different centuries. The concepts also led to extreme Muslim conquests, which expanded the Islamic empires. On the other hand, the Christians did not heavily focus on the holy war due to their beliefs. The varying beliefs among the Muslims and the Christians intensified, thus leading to vast differences and disagreements among the two religions, especially between 1946 and 2002 (Brown, 2017). Therefore, the identified difference led to the emergence of the societal problem called religious conflict and violence. The disagreements between the Christians and the Muslims also expanded in different religions such as Hinduism. The...
