During the Italian Neorealist period, directors like Vittorio De Sica recruited non-professional actors for their films. Many of these people had lived in poverty during and after the war. They were casted to portray their own lives. However, when Europe made films about poverty and the depressing reality of everyday life, American cinema began to thrive by providing an "escape" and cinema as entertainment rather than a portrayal of everyday reality. (America would later compete with Europe again when filmmakers from the French New Wave began to tell stories with 'loose' and 'lost' characters which drew in greater audiences.)

During the 19th century, the world witnessed one of the most prolific films ever produced in human history, known as Bicycle Thieves. Set in the era of World War 2, the movie narrates the ordeal of Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani), whose bicycle gets stolen. Uniquely, director Vittorio de Sicca portrays how the man, aided by his son Bruno, desperately journeys to find the bicycle. The film succeeds in showing the actual reality of poverty. Bicycle Thieves are indisputably a break from the recent movie scripts due to their narrative style, simplicity, and relevancy.
The movie is different from modern film in various ways. The first difference that distinguishes this masterpiece from contemporary cinema is its simplicity. Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves are inarguably giving us a break from movies with obscure plots. It is a simple story of a man's desperate quest to find a bicycle key to his survival.
