Areas of Perinatal Care
Respiratory diseases are common in premature children due to lung immaturity. These may be present or persist despite the use of corticosteroids that induces lung maturity before birth. As a result, they are predisposed to respiratory infections, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and others, leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This is a dreaded complication of lung maturity. Hence, their parents must be adequately educated (Caserta et al., 2017). In this case, Melvin’s parents must be educated on the signs and symptoms that point to the worsening of respiratory disease, when to seek consultation, the importance and steps of Kangaroo mother care, and the essentiality of breastfeeding.
ARDS is common in premature babies, and its signs and symptoms must be recognized to prevent dreaded complications, or worse, the patient’s mortality. It presents difficulty breathing that worsens over time, bluish skin discoloration secondary to the lack of oxygen, tachypnea, flaring nostrils, grunting sounds when breathing, and chest retractions. When these are present, the baby must be brought to his pediatrician for diagnostic evaluation and confinement. This is important because ARDS results in decreased oxygen delivery to the body, which reduces the efficiency of the organ systems. Neglecting the condition may lead to lung air leaks and chronic lung diseases (Stanford Children’s Health, n.d.).
The Kangaroo Mother Care method holds the baby’s body in contact with the mother or an adult’s chest for an extended period. Studies have shown that this improves the parent-child relationship and increases the baby’s immune system, as manifested by the reduced transmission of nosocomial infections. Furthermore, the act provides warmth to the baby, which helps in normalizing the cardiorespiratory function and stabilizes their temperature (Jefferies et al., 2012).
