The article “Deficit, Difference, or Both Autism and Neurodiversity” by Kapp et al. (2012) explains that autistic individuals struggle with matters related to challenges associated with being autistic where the people are likely to see the difference with other people as a lonely experience because they do not belong. Additionally, the authors explain that autistic self-advocates in autism rights and neurodiversity. This article focuses on examining and evaluating how the awareness of neurodiversity and connection to autism is associated with the three means of responding to autism: elimination, amelioration, and celebration. The authors have asserted that framing people with these conditions as being sick or having reduced capacity helps in granting and presenting people with the ability to make care decisions (Kapp, p.2). Therefore, parents with autistic children are therefore able to facilitate effective treatment with intentions for the cure.
Furthermore, the article explains that neurodiversity encourages subjective well-being and adaptive and does not focus on functioning. Besides, the neurodiversity advocates are against interventions that e aimed at eliminating behaviors that may be considered uncommon and harmless such as repetitive body movements and other common features such as avoiding eye contact. Additionally, there are different reactions to sociopolitical change associated with the neurodiversity movement. For instance, there has been opposition regarding the measures implemented to ameliorate the defects linked to autism (Kapp, p.2-3). Further, there are differences that exist in research aims, and medical studies and individuals with autism have called for research and studies that addressed their interests. The authors have supported the need for research supported by the autistic persons’ views indicating that learning about neurodiversity can be a turning point towards the beginning of the holistic formulation of autism. The authors further indicate that having research focused on neurodiversity would benefit autistic individuals and their parents because it would make them feel strengthened about the associated disability and become supporters of the movement.
Certainly, better and informed research studies would indeed facilitate awareness because this would make it possible to facilitate impression and concept regarding the positive aspects linked to autism; however, this cannot reduce the negative views promoted by autistic self-advocates. Moreover, neurodiversity awareness may indeed help in facilitating positive and better changes for autistic individuals. This is possible since the negative emotions may become less visible and receptive. Besides, this would also help in encouraging and promoting better parenting practices; it can encourage parents and family members to focus on acceptable goals and effective intervening methods. Further, disability is socially constructed; this perspective would make autistic people see their brain as an obstacle that prevents them from gaining the needed social acceptance.
