Moonlight, one of 2016’s best movies, is directed by Barry Jenkins. Jenkins masterfully crafts a poignant and nuanced portrayal of the complexities of identity, love, and growing up as a young, gay, black man in America. Narrated in three acts, each focuses on a different period in the life of the protagonist, Chiron (played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes at different ages). The film delves into the struggles and triumphs Chiron experiences as he grapples with his sexuality, relationship with his mother (Naomie Harris), and his childhood friend Kevin (Jharrel Jerome and André Holland). Moonlight also explores the societal expectations placed on him as a young black man.
