Week 7 Observations: Open and Globular Star Clusters Lab
Purpose(s) of Lab
The purpose of the lab was to observe Open and Globular star clusters and note the differences in appearances of each type of cluster and any visible interstellar gas and dust visible. Also to prefer some online information gathering on each object such as distance, brightness, mass, age, or other characteristics of each object observed.

Apparatus used in the Lab
The following apparatus were used;
The IVC ‘Dark Site’.
Celestron CPC1100 telescope with f7 ‘focal reducer’ to increase visibility of interstellar gas and dust.
Maillinicam DS10CTEC camera to record images of the objects within a typical 60 second ‘integration’ time.
A PC and monitor set up to allow viewing of the objects.
Procedure
Task 1: Professor Schiano aimed the telescope at Open and Globular Star Cluster and any associated interstellar gas and dust. He announced the names of the objects and provided any information to be included on the Lab Report. The name and the time of your observation and any other data such as the sky conditions that are relevant to your observation were noted. The brightness, color, and position of any stars in the monitor view were also noted. A sketch of what was seen for each object was drawn.
Task 2: Professor Schiano sent learners the pictures taken of the objects through Canvas. The printed images were included in the Lab Report. The object name was identified on the picture.
Analysis
Task 3: For each object, online research was performed on the object. The details collected for the objects included the following;
Name of Object
Type of Object
Distance to Object
Size of Object in Light Years
Mass of Object
Type of Stars in cluster such as an HR Diagram
Any information on associated Interstellar gas and dust with each object
