People often fall into the trap of risking critical misunderstanding by judging from a single story about persons and places. In what she refers to as “The Danger of a Single Story” in her TED talk, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian novelist, makes a case of her life and experiences of people who have fallen into this deception of a single story about the African society. This snare of a single story leads to the people she describes completely missing an accurate interpretation of society based on prejudices. Adichie describes situations where she was misled while growing up in Nigeria and during her studies in the United States to believe in a single story. In her concluding remarks, the speaker tips the audience that when people reject a single story, when they appreciate that there is never a single story about any place or persons, they regain some form of ‘paradise’ or peace of understanding society (Adichie, 2009). An educated society needs to read what is written, see what is produced, and hear the stories of people from various cultures to avoid the danger of a single story and prejudices that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie describes in her TED talk.
