Children's play involving sexual roles and relationships is universal (Ford & Beach 1951); therefore, raising kids to be functional members of society is no walk in the park. Many adults are concerned about sexual abuse and child behavior that often indicate abuse. Often caregivers are caught in a dilemma on how to distinguish normal healthy behavior's among children, such as from those that are not, as in the case of Sarah and David.
I resonate with the conclusion that children's normal sexual behavior compromises an extraordinary broad-spectrum, which often fosters uncertainty and anxiety among parents and caregivers. The article gives guidelines based on the three childhood dimensions on dealing with children's sexual behavior. From that, the meanings of childhood behaviors to adults often do not have the same meaning, nor do the same thoughts and feelings accompany them. Children's behavior is distinguished from curiosity and play versus knowing and consequential behavior. Spontaneity and openness versus self-consciousness and privacy and sensuality and excitement versus passion and eroticism.
