Interpersonal Communication Stereotype
A Stereotype is a widely held belief by an individual or a group of individuals about a person, object or institution. The stereotype colors how we perceive individuals and impacts our interactions with them CITATION Sus \l 1033 (Beebe). Stereotypes are not founded on an empirical examination of factual information.
An example of a stereotype that I used to believe in is the characterization of women, particularly black women as angry. The stereotype developed or was mainly influenced by Hollywood productions. I am an avid consumer of cinematic productions. As such, I watch a significant amount of movies and films. In a large number of films where black women are incorporated. They are portrayed as the angry black women. The women are consistently angry and are easily irritated and agitated. Their default reaction to any challenge to their authority is to raise their voice. The angry woman can be a mother, head of an institution or just a single lady. The common denominator is their ability to get angry at virtually anything.
