The principle of equivalence is Carl Jung’s second principle of psychic energy, which postulates that the energy used in creating a condition is not lost, but is rather transferred to another part of one’s personality (Schultz & Schultz, 2016). Therefore, a decline or disappearance of a psychic value in a particular area means that there is a shift of energy to another area in the psyche. It can be said that energy is conserved. An example is when a person holds a butterfly in their hand. In this case, one possesses the energy to allow it to fly away. Correspondingly, the person also possesses an equal amount of energy to crush it. Therefore, if the person allows the butterfly to fly away, the energy to crush it is transferred to another part of their personality.
