Many of you will be on the job or internship market in the near future (maybe even this semester). Given that one emphasis in this course is career development, I’ve allotted 2 classes during the semester for you each to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP) activity that can help you better assess your career interests, strengths and weaknesses, and develop personal goals they may be used to help you improve weaknesses relevant to your future job and needed KSAO’s. For this PDP activity, you will be asked to prepare a document that includes several items:

A brief reflection on your own strengths and weaknesses (3 each) in your current jobs or in your role as students (1 paragraph for strengths; 1 paragraph for weaknesses). I highly recommend (but it is not required) talking or emailing with your current boss, friends, classmates, and family members who can help you identify these strengths and weaknesses.
Take the career interest profile at: https://www(dot)roguecc(dot)edu/Counseling/HollandCodes/test.asp. State your result. For instance: “I was an SEI.”
Search O*NET for jobs that match your interest profile results (using the link provided with your interest profile results). Pick 1 job that most interests you and based on O*NET, list the key knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to do well at this job. (Points #2 and #3 can be one paragraph).
Write one paragraph documenting how your current strengths and weaknesses might apply to the KSAO’s you listed from O*NET. Also, set 3 specific and challenging but achievable goals (each weakness should have 1 corresponding goal) for how you intend to improve your weaknesses to better prepare you for the job you chose.

***For example: “My interest profile results suggested I would be good at sales (the job I chose), which requires the ability to communicate effectively with clients and coworkers. However, communication is one weakness I identified about myself. Therefore, I set the following goal: “When working in group projects in my classes, I will volunteer to take notes during meetings and practice communicating the key points of these meetings in the following group meeting.” An alternative goal could be: “I will take a class on Communications next semester and incorporate strategies taught into my daily communication with friends, family, and coworkers.”

The deliverable PDP document should be approximately 1-2 single-spaced pages (4 paragraphs) in length and is due via upload to Canvas.
