The passages in Persuasion, like most of Austen's work, talk about social and political issues. This novel stirs the conversation and tries to destroy the conservative mindset of its time. One of the themes that this novel has is the class status and social influence. In the early times, as reflected in the novel, there are ways to advance your social status without much effort. One way is that you can marry an affluent person whose wealth can influence one's class belonging. It does not require much effort when it comes to leveling up because a person could find his/her target spouse and plot a plan to get their attention. An emotional connection can come after. It is also Charlotte's, from Pride and Prejudice, advice to Elizabeth about marrying (Austen, 1818).
Another way to go up the social class is to become part of the navy. Being part of the navy in that time does not only give you a place in the upper class but also attracts you more respect and admiration. For women in that time, it must be an easier way to advance in society by marrying a navy.
As the title suggests, the pursuit is also a theme applied in this novel. This is evident in the case of Anne and Captain Wentworth. Their relationship shows two sides of gender role possibility. When Anne rejected the Captain, it shows that she thinks about her decisions carefully. Anne allows herself to be persuaded but her rationality makes her decide wisely for her own good.
